I slightly revamped some of the characters (with some input from my friend Cathy!) and did a couple more, including the main character, the pigeons! These are not the sizes they will be in the finished application, they will all be sized appropriately according to the animal that they are, but this is just for building the movieclips.
I gave some of the characters patterns on their bodies, to make them more interesting, which was also inspired by the bull animation that I found on Youtube:
I also gave the characters a drop shadow, to make them look more cut out and less flat.
The other issue to consider is how to make them stand out from the background. The characters themselves are quite simplistic in terms of styling, so the background can't be too detailed, or too the same style, otherwise there will be nothing to differentiate the background from the characters. I think staying with the limited palette of the background at the moment (eg. the blue that is the background, but with just lighter shades for the background objects (eg. mountain side) and colour for the background features (eg. plants can be similar colours to the characters). I will look at more backgrounds done by other artists for inspiration, and use the work that I already looked at by Hokusai, which is very simple in colouring like the look that I want to acheive.
Next... more inspirational sites for storyboard, plants and background!
